Together with the PPU and other fellow workers for peace (Conscience, Fellowship of Reconciliation, Humanists UK, Movement for the Abolition of War, Network for Peace, Pax Christi, Peace News, Peace Pledge Union, Quaker Peace and Social Witness, The Right to Refuse to Kill Group and Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom) we are supporting an online commemoration of conscientious objectors throughout the world, both active today and from the past.

Join us for a minute’s silence, songs and speeches. Niat Chefena Hailemariam from Network of Eritrean Women will speak about military service in Eritrea, which is compulsory for both men and women. Actor Michael Mears will present a performance piece based on testimonies from Second World War conscientious objectors. He has also filmed, during lockdown at home, a version of his play This Evil Thing on Britain’s conscientious objectors in the First World War, which will be released online from May 15th.

To attend the ceremony, simply visit this page. Joining instructions will be added closer to the time. No need to register in advance.
