Pathways to Peace Conference

8th March 2019 @ 5:00 pm - 10th March 2019 @ 2:00 pm

Pathways to Peace 2019

Join us as we hold our annual conference, 8th – 10th March 2019 at Hinsley Hall in Leeds.

With a focus on challenging the military mindset and finding alternative pathways to peace, we will be welcoming Rev Dan Woodhouse, anti-arms campaigner, and Fabian Hamilton, Shadow Minister for Disarmament and Peace on Saturday 9thMarch.

Rev Dan Woodhouse made headlines for breaking into a BAE Systems airbase in Lancashire alongside Quaker friend Sam Walton. The base was producing and maintaining warplanes for use in war crimes in Yemen by the Saudi led coalition.  Dan is a Methodist Minister currently serving in Leeds.

Fabian Hamilton MP for Leeds North East, and Shadow Minister for Disarmament and Peace argues that the UK has the institutional capacity to formulate, influence and implement international strategies to promote peace. And that these resources should be used to strengthen the liberal and social democratic values of human rights, democracy, poverty reduction and global governance.  And when writing about the use of British arms in Yemen, he has said: “…It is likely that American and British weapons are being used to kill innocent civilians every single day. This must now be called out for what it is: Saudi-led indiscriminate bombing – and a clear breach of international law. Over 13 million people are now at risk of famine… by continuing to supply arms and ammunition to the Saudis, Britain would appear to be complicit.” (Politics Home, November 2018).

Saturday 9th March will also include workshops on:

Rethinking Security with Celia MckeonRethinking Security is a network of organisations, academics and activists who share a concern about the current approach to national security in the UK and beyond. The network is committed to building a much richer understanding of what security really means, and of what is required to tackle insecurity and build a more just and peaceful world.

Engaging with the Media – changing the narrative for peace with Philip Huggins: What is the role of news and other media in reflecting and shaping attitudes to peace? This workshop will explore different aspects of engaging with news and other media on peace concerns. It will be a chance to reflect on the change of narrative that is needed and to explore practical ways the skills
and approaches that might be used to this end.
