A growing number of Orthodox theologians have added their signatures to a statement condemning the “Russkii Mir” or Russian World teaching. This ideology, emanating from much of the Russian patriarchate, provides a pseudo-religous underpinning justifying the subjugation of Ukraine by Russia. It argues that Ukraine as well as Belarus and other regions form part of a ‘Holy Russia’ with Moscow as its political centre and Kyev as its spiritual centre. Both Putin and Patriarch Kirill have been using the ideology of Russkii Mir to provide moral and religious justification for the invasion of Ukraine.
